Waste Composition Analysis: A Deep Dive into Plastic Waste and its Role in Sustainable Waste Management

Blog Post ()

Waste management is a central pillar of sustainable urban development and environmental protection. One of the most effective tools for optimizing waste systems is standardized waste composition analysis (random samples, sorting categories, mass fractions).

By examining waste streams, especially plastic waste (e.g., packaging, films, hard plastics), municipalities, waste management companies, and private actors gain precise insight into material flows, recyclable fractions, and recovery potential.

ICP Ingenieurgesellschaft Prof. Czurda und Partner mbH – part of SIERA – conducts comprehensive waste composition and morphological analyses to create a reliable data basis for strategic decision-making. These analyses provide transparency and enable benchmarking over time periods, locations, or target values (e.g., recycling rates), forming the backbone of data-driven waste management strategies.

What is Waste Composition Analysis?

Waste composition analysis involves the detailed examination of materials in municipal waste.

It includes:

  • Random sampling procedures
  • Defined sorting categories
  • Determination of mass fractions
  • Quantification of recyclable materials
  • Documentation for benchmarking and comparison

The outcome: a reliable data basis for investment decisions, infrastructure planning, and tenders.

Without accurate and standardized data, waste management systems risk inefficiencies, increased costs, and lost material recovery opportunities.

By conducting these analyses, municipalities gain deeper insights into the types and quantities of waste, especially plastic waste (e.g., packaging, films, hard plastics). These analyses also consider sorting categories, mass fractions, and allow for benchmarking over time periods, locations, or target values (e.g., recycling rates).

For effective waste management, it’s critical to have reliable data about the waste composition. This allows waste planners to adjust their strategies for waste collection, recycling, and landfill management. Without accurate data, cities risk inefficient waste management, leading to unnecessary costs, environmental harm, and lost recycling opportunities.

Focusing on Plastic Waste:

Plastic waste represents one of the most pressing environmental challenges. Its diversity and varying recyclability require detailed analysis.

Through standardized waste composition analyses (random samples, sorting categories, mass fractions), ICP Ingenieurgesellschaft evaluates:

  • Packaging plastics
  • Plastic films
  • Hard plastics
  • Single-use plastics
  • Durable plastic components

This detailed breakdown provides the foundation for:

  • Improved separate collection
  • Enhanced recyclability
  • Increased material recovery
  • Targeted recycling programs

By moving beyond total volume figures and analyzing material composition at fraction level, municipalities can implement optimized recycling systems based on measurable evidence.

The Role of ICP Ingenieurgesellschaft in Waste Composition Analysis:

ICP Ingenieurgesellschaft, plays a crucial role in helping municipalities, waste management companies, and private actors with comprehensive analytical services that enable:

  • Quantifying Recyclable Materials: Precise identification of recyclable fractions, especially plastic waste, to increase recycling rates.
  • Reliable Decision-Making: Provision of a dependable data foundation for infrastructure planning, public tenders, and long-term investments.
  • Benchmarking & Performance Monitoring: Comparison across time periods, regions, or defined targets (e.g., recycling rates).
  • System Optimization: Identification of inefficiencies and data gaps to improve operational waste systems.

These services form the core of modern, data-driven waste management strategies.

The Importance of Plastic Waste Analysis in a Circular Economy:

A functioning circular economy depends on transparency in material flows and measurable recovery performance. Waste composition analysis provides the factual foundation required to transition from linear disposal systems to circular value chains. By identifying material fractions precisely — especially plastic waste (e.g., packaging, films, hard plastics) — stakeholders gain clarity about recycling potential, loss streams, and optimization pathways.

Standardized waste composition analyses (random samples, sorting categories, mass fractions) make it possible to evaluate how effectively materials are captured, separated, and reintegrated into the production cycle. This data-driven understanding is essential for aligning municipal waste systems with circular economy targets and regulatory frameworks.

Waste composition analysis enables:

  • Targeted recycling program design
  • Evidence-based policy development
  • Sustainable packaging optimization
  • Measurable reduction of plastic waste

By establishing reliable baseline values and enabling benchmarking across time periods, locations, or target values (e.g., recycling rates), decision-makers can track progress transparently and adjust strategies where necessary.

In this way, waste composition analysis becomes more than a technical assessment tool. It serves as a strategic instrument for long-term system transformation, supporting municipalities, waste management companies, and private actors in building resilient, circular, and data-driven waste management strategies.

The waste composition analysis, particularly of plastic waste, is vital for developing efficient, sustainable waste management systems. ICP Ingenieurgesellschaft’s expertise provides municipalities and businesses with valuable data to improve recycling efforts and reduce environmental harm, paving the way for smarter, more sustainable waste management practices. A Message from the Founder: Florian von Tucher

In the mid-2000s my involvement in development aid took me to some of the most remote and impoverished regions of the world.

Northern Tibet, Mongolia, and Western China – where I was involved with the implementation of decentralised wastewater treatment systems, I realised I needed a deeper purpose. Though I later found success in real estate development, the desire to make a lasting impact never left me.

A pivotal moment occurred when I was invited to Ghana by my friend and mentor, Cardinal Peter Turkson, who was the head of the Dicastery for the Promotion of Integral Human Development of the Catholic Church at the time. He has since been appointed the Pontifical Chancellor of the Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Chancellor of Social Sciences.

Cardinal Turkson had a profound influence on me. His invitation gave me the opportunity to witness firsthand the development needs of the country. We reflected on my experiences in China, and together, we envisioned a model of development that would take root in one community and gradually expand. We believed that small, strategic steps could lead to lasting transformation – just like the biblical parable of the mustard seed, which grows into something far greater than its humble beginnings.

Cardinal Turkson’s steadfast belief in this vision and encouragement became the base upon which the Mustard Seed Foundation was built. His unwavering support, wisdom, and guidance helped shape not just the mission of the Foundation, but my personal journey as well.

With the encouragement of the Cardinal and the Integral Human Development (IHD) office, we initially operated with the IHD before establishing the Mustard Seed Foundation as a stand-alone organisation in Germany. We have been fortunate to receive support from numerous European donors, a humble reminder that our mission is not just about individual efforts – it is about collective impact.

Collaboration has been a cornerstone of our work. We have partnered with organisations like Caritas and Rotary International to extend our reach. One of our most impactful collaborations has been with M&P Group, who donate their engineering concepts, project supervision, and high-quality technical execution, allowing 100% of donor contributions to go into the projects themselves.

One such initiative is the Clean Water Initiative, launched in partnership with M&P Group. In 2024, we completed a well in Ndoss, Senegal, significantly improving agricultural efficiency and empowering the local community. This project epitomises our commitment to sustainable solutions – starting with clean water and gradually building infrastructure that supports long-term development.

Our work aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on poverty alleviation, economic empowerment, environmental sustainability, and humanitarian aid. Our model is simple but effective: start with one project and expand, year by year, to create an ecosystem of support. A water well leads to a school, which leads to renewable energy solutions, which, in turn, fosters economic opportunities. Over time, these efforts cumulatively transform entire regions.

The Mustard Seed Foundation is a testament to what can be achieved with nothing more than a vision, a strong commitment, and the faith of a mustard seed. Yet, none of this would have been possible without the belief and encouragement of Cardinal Peter Turkson. His unwavering faith in our mission gave me the courage to persevere through challenges and continue expanding our impact. As we continue our work, we remain driven by the belief that small beginnings can yield great outcomes, inspiring hope and lasting change in the communities we serve. His legacy of faith, vision, and commitment to human dignity is deeply woven into every initiative we undertake.
